The Department of Communication at San Diego Christian College is pleased to announce a partnership with the Department of Aviation in providing a drone certification option for its Film and Media students.
Thanks to the generosity of multiple industry partners who donated simulators and Unmanned Aerial Systems, or drones, to the College, the Department of Aviation recently established a UAS program. In addition to their use in Aviation, drones are also becoming widely popularized in the film industry, as they allow filmmakers to capture unique angles in a much more efficient and cost-effective manner.
Dr. Lisa Dunne, Chair of the Department of Communication, says that the drone certification option gives students a unique angle on directing. “The addition of UAS certification program provides our students with the cutting-edge technology that will give them the skills they need to succeed in an ever-changing market,” she said.
In addition to classes in cinematography, directing, and screenwriting, Film and Media students will have the option of taking three Aviation courses to complete their certification. This creative pairing of Aviation and Communication courses will help students earn a UAS drone certification alongside their Bachelor’s degree in Communication.
Aviation Director Dr. John Marselus says he is excited to combine these two great programs and to prepare graduates for employment in this new exciting growth area. “This past year in Aviation, we have seen eight graduates hired with starting salaries in the six-digit level,” he said. “SDC is on the forefront of this technology in preparing men and women to serve the Lord in this exploding arena.”
Dr. Dunne is grateful for the creative partnership with the Department of Aviation in this endeavor. ”SDC offers a rich environment of interdisciplinary support,” she said. “Partnering with other academic disciplines is one of the many ways that SDC sets itself apart as an innovative institution.”
