Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science, BS

Overview

The mission of the Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science at San Diego Christian College is to prepare students to matriculate to Physical Therapy School, Occupational Therapy School, Chiropractic School, and to teach Physical Education. Rehabilitation Science provides students with a rigorous curriculum that is geared to those students who seek admittance to Physical Therapy School or Occupational Therapy School. Entry requirements for Physical Therapy School and Occupational Therapy School are very competitive. San Diego Christian college is one of several colleges or universities in the Western United States to have a dedicated pre-professional curriculum in both Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy.

BENEFITS

As a pre-professional program, the vast majority of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science graduates focus on matriculation to physical therapy or occupational therapy school. The program also prepares SDCC students to matriculate to medical schools, dental schools, and related allied health careers e.g. physician assistant, nursing, and orthopedic and chiropractic technicians.

Another emphasis of the program is teaching physical education in grades K-12. Students focus on elementary, middle or high school physical education preparation. California requires public school teachers to be credentialed, therefore students are encouraged to complete SDCC’s one-year Teacher Credential Program after earning their bachelor’s degree.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Kinesiology is the study of human movement. The term is used in higher education institutions to describe a multifaceted field of study in which movement or physical activity is the primary focus. Physical activity includes exercise for health promotion and physical fitness, activities of daily living, and involves special populations such as children, elderly, persons with injury or disease and athletes

The Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences curriculum at SDCC is one of the few in the United States that offers both a pre-physical therapy emphasis and a pre-occupational therapy emphasis. In addition to these two very popular courses of study, students can also elect to emphasize in traditional K-12 Physical Education and pre-chiropractic studies. Each emphasis combines hands-on experience with rigorous academic and professional study. Students are taught by nationally and internationally recognized professors who mentor their students within a Christian environment that engenders spiritual, personal, physical, and academic growth.

Our program offers concentrations in the following:

  • Teaching/Coaching
  • Pre Physical Therapy
  • Pre Occupational Therapy
  • Pre Chiropractic
  • K-12 Physical Education & Coaching

ALUMNI SUCCESS

“I began my four year journey at SDCC in the fall of 1999 and graduated with a Kinesiology degree in the Spring of 2003. The teaching, and friends, from SDC grounded me intellectually and spiritually and prepared me for my career. I am currently in my fifth year working at Francis Parker School in San Diego, as the Athletic Trainer and P.E. teacher. San Diego Christian College prepared me to serve young people in an environment that I love. I feel privileged to be able to apply the practical sciences that I learned in my major, while following Christ’s calling to serve others. As the Athletic Trainer at Francis Parker I am able to work one-on-one with injured athletes. This has allowed me to build meaningful relationships with my students that I hope has an eternal impact.” –Jarrad Phillips, Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, 2003

“The Department of Kinesiology at SDCC prepared me to enter the rewarding field of physical therapy. Through this program I was able to obtain a job at a local hospital specifically in the Acute Physical Therapy department. The professors provided mentorship and support to enter my chosen career field and they also took the time to really invest in me as a person, student, and future colleague. As I reflect on my time at SDCC, I realize how privileged I was to obtain an education at an institution that impacted every aspect of my life.” –Daniel, Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, 2015
