Debra Cunningham, Ed.D., Chair of the Department of Education
Growing up in Southern California, I had an awareness of God but it was not until my senior year of high school that I came to understand I could have a personal relationship with the Lord through Jesus Christ. I received Christ as my Savior the day before I began college, and oh, what a journey He has taken me on! I received my Associate in Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from Mt. San Antonio College, a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California Baptist University, a master’s degree in Christian Education from Southwestern Seminary, a California Clear Teaching Credential from Chico State University, and most recently a doctorate of education in higher education leadership from Azusa Pacific University.
My greatest joy next to knowing Jesus is being married to my husband Ken. We have two adult children, a wonderful son-in-law and three grandchildren for whom we love being Papa Red and Gramsie. After 25 years in Yuba City, CA we relocated to San Diego to assume the position of Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Liberal Studies and Teacher Credential Program. It is a privilege and honor to serve at such a godly institution.
I am passionate about education! My greatest joy comes in being able to train men and women to effectively impact and teach children and adolescents to become responsible citizens who grow and maximize their potential. Being able to incorporate a faith aspect into training others to teach brings extreme satisfaction in that I am training others to make a difference not only in this world, but also in the Kingdom of God. My life motto is characterized by three words: Union (with Christ), Transformation (by Christ), and Freedom (in Christ).
