Pastor, Author, Leader, Actor, and Speaker to address Class of 2021
April 13, 2021
Pastor Miles McPherson will deliver the 2021 Commencement Address for San Diego Christian College on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cajon, CA.
McPherson is the founder and lead Pastor of The Rock Church in San Diego, California. In 2000, he felt called by God to start The Rock Church. A cornerstone of the San Diego community, The Rock Church seeks to reach, equip, and send people to impact their community and beyond. According to Outreach Magazine, the Rock has consistently been one of the nation’s largest churches with over 20,000 people attending The Rock’s Sunday services at one of their five campuses, at microsites around San Diego, or experiencing the services through online streaming.
San Diego Christian College President, Dr. Kevin D. Corsini commented, “God is transforming lives through the powerful ministry of Pastor Miles and we are excited to have him share with our graduating seniors on this momentous occasion.”
Before becoming a Pastor, Miles played four years in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers from 1982-1985. During this time, he developed a cocaine addiction that found the NFL star in a tailspin as he began feeding his habit. After his second season in the NFL and after a weekend-long drug binge, he called out to Jesus Christ, accepted Him, and stopped doing drugs in one day.
After his football career, Miles felt the call into full-time ministry. He worked as a Youth Pastor for Horizon Christian Fellowship in San Diego and enrolled in Azusa Pacific University’s School of Theology, receiving his Masters of Divinity degree in 1991 before founding Rock Church.
In 2015, Pastor Miles began “Do Something Church,” an initiative dedicated to equipping churches to transform the world by successfully meeting their community’s needs through innovative outreach strategies. At this time, his team discovered an opportunity to reach thousands of people through online gospel presentations. As of 2019, they have had 53 million people view a gospel presentation from The Rock online, resulting in over 1.8 million responding that they prayed to receive Christ!
Recently, God has uniquely positioned Pastor Miles to address a topic that has been heavy on his heart throughout his life. Through his new book, “The Third Option: Hope for a Racially Divided Nation,” Pastor Miles desires to bring God’s healing to racial tension and division in our country with a powerful message and practical next steps to begin the conversation with “someone not like you.”
Dr. Corsini continued, “Pastor Miles’ unique approach both inspires and equips individuals to live with purpose and make a genuine impact in the world. He serves as a living example for our graduates as they launch into careers and seek to accomplish all that Christ has planned for their lives.”
McPherson’s address delivered live at Shadow Mountain Community Church will be part of the Commencement ceremony for San Diego Christian College, the college’s 49th graduating class. The ceremony takes place May 8 at 10 AM. Due to Covid-19 protocols, this ceremony is a ticketed event and tickets are being distributed to graduates only. The ceremony will be viewable online for those not attending in person. Learn more about San Diego Christian College’s 2021 commencement.
