In this edition of my Master’s of Arts Degree in Teaching, I share my week 2 journal assignment for my ED603 class: Qualitative Methods in Action Research. The topic of this journal is courage, and I speak about some personal interpretations of courage.

Courage has a ripple effect. Every time we choose courage, we make everyone around us a little better and the world a little braver. And our world could stand to be a little kinder and braver. (p. 15)

Question: Can you think of a time when you experienced the ripple effect of courage? What happened? How were you affected? (p. 15) I felt the ripple effect of courage when I started my podcast this year, Inspiring Teachers. Prior to our first episode, I did not feel that being open, honest, and transparent would lead to growth. I thought maybe it was self-serving, and would be seen as arrogant. When I flash forward, only 6 months later, I have talked to over 50 remarkable people, all of which have shared a loving comment or note of appreciation for how our show made them feel. This has been a reflecting pool of positive energy. While the first show might not have been a swim to the depths that would move anyone deeply, (https://youtu.be/Ty4UYkreQrA), the most recent panel of 7 teachers opened up my world in a big way (https://youtu.be/Qbs3vcBtW2c)! Teachers were “fanning” out, as if in the presence of celebrities, for being able to speak to leading teachers and writers around the country. It felt like the show had landed.

This event, while still an early step in my journey, felt like a rewarding of courage. It felt like a small piece of validation, and I was affected by the experience by having an increase in motivation and drive. I want the show to continue to make people smile, encourage, and to start more people on their own journeys in education in the future.
